Suggested Sharpening Schedule
Based on expert opinion, a typical time frame for skates to be sharpened is about every 4-6 hours of skating time.  The need for sharpening goes up or down based on usage and the weight of a player so younger players (Atoms/Mites) might only need to get their skates sharpened every 8 hours of use while a Bantam might need them sharpened every 2-3 hours of skating.

Simple Suggest number guide

Atoms 3 times every 2 months = 5
Mites 2-3 times a month = 10 or 15
Squirts 2-3 times a month = 10 or 15
Pee Wees 3 times a month = 15
Bantams 3 times a month = 15

Outdoor Ice
Due to the dirt and other contaminates that blow onto the outdoor ice your skates will loose their edges much quicker. If you take advantage of outdoor ice you may want to consider getting your skates sharpened more often.

Learning more about the art of tuning skates
If you want to learn more about how to evaluate blade repair, see problems and understand science of skate sharpening visit http://www.skaters-edge.com/goodedges.htm. If you read this article we are not equipped to contour skate blades.

Who will be sharpening the skates
Jason Woods, USM Arena Maintenance, will be doing Winter Club’s skate sharpening. Jason will also identify problems with skates such as bent blades and lose rivets, noting these issues on the tag. Currently, we do not have the equipment to fix skates and suggest going to a local retail store who can handle skate repairs.
